Search
What it does
Section titled “What it does”Search is the full results page after a shopper submits a search. It can show products, articles, and pages, with the filters and sorting options Shopify provides. It is separate from the header’s search suggestions.
Add it to a page
Section titled “Add it to a page”- Open the theme editor from Online Store → Themes.
- Choose the Search template and select Search in the sidebar.
- Adjust its settings and save.
The results page already belongs to the Search template; you do not add another copy to a normal page.
Set it up: quick start
Section titled “Set it up: quick start”- Configure your product filters in Shopify Search & Discovery.
- Keep Enable filtering and Enable sorting on.
- Set Results per page to 12.
- Search your store for a real product term.
- Select a filter, submit Apply, and check that the keyword and content type remain selected.
Settings
Section titled “Settings”| Setting | Default | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enable filtering | On | On / Off | Display filters returned by Shopify; this does not define new filters |
| Enable sorting | On | On / Off | Offer the sort choices supplied by Shopify |
| Results per page | 12 | 12–48; step 12 | Number of results per page, including mixed content types |
| Card background tint | Cycle | None (white); Cream; Lilac; Mint; Apricot; Cycle | Soft pastel treatment for product cards |
Images and content tips
Section titled “Images and content tips”Search uses your published product and content data. Filter availability depends on Shopify’s search data and your Search & Discovery configuration; the theme does not invent choices with no source.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- Search in offers All content, Products, Articles, and Pages.
- Filtering and sorting keep the current keyword and content type. Clear all removes filters while keeping that search context.
- A new search submission starts with its chosen keyword and type, rather than carrying over every previous filter.
- No-results pages keep the filter controls so shoppers can broaden their search.
- The forms work with ordinary page navigation, including when browser scripting is disabled. Changes take effect when the shopper submits the form.
Example setups
Section titled “Example setups”Small catalog: enable filtering and sorting, keep 12 results per page, and use Cycle for product card colors.
Content-focused store: keep sorting on, turn filtering off if you do not need product filters, and use 24 results per page. Shoppers can choose Articles or Pages in Search in.
Common questions
Section titled “Common questions”Why is a filter missing? Check your Shopify Search & Discovery setup and whether Shopify returns that filter for the current results.
Why are there no results? Remove restrictive filters with Clear all, try All content, or change the search term.
Does this change search suggestions in the header? No. These settings control the full Search results page.
Empty search results
Section titled “Empty search results”| Setting | Default | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Empty-state text | Empty | Optional formatted guidance; leave empty for the normal translated explanation. |
| Empty-state product collection | Not selected | Show up to four real products only when there are no results. Empty collections stay hidden. |
Filters and search controls remain available. Suggestions open full product details and do not offer quick purchase. Product card defaults also apply to these cards.
