Multi-video banner

Multi-video banner holds a whole set of videos in one section, arranged in one of five layouts: round social-style badges, a square grid, a mixed-size collage, a row of portrait reels, or wide 16:9 tiles. Each video gets its own cover with a play button, and shoppers start the ones they care about. Nothing plays in the background uninvited and nothing downloads until it is needed.

Use this section when you have several short clips and one Video section would bury them: customer-submitted pet clips, quick how-to demos, clips you also post socially. A heading and an optional link sit above the videos, so the section doubles as a “watch more” hub.

Each video is a content block, so you can add, remove, and reorder clips freely — up to 12.

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes and click Edit theme. (Older admin versions label this button Customize.)
  2. Open the template where you want the section.
  3. Click Add section and choose Multi-video banner. It starts with four empty video slots.
  4. Pick a Layout — Circle badges is the default. You can switch later in the sidebar.
  5. Open each Video item block and add a video or a link.

The Layout setting switches between five arrangements:

LayoutThe videos look like
Circle badges (default)Round clips in a centered row, like social profile highlights. The Item size setting makes them smaller or larger
GridSquare tiles in a 2 × 2 arrangement on desktop
Mixed sizesThe first video is a large 2 × 2 feature, the rest are squares around it
Portrait videosTall 4:5 tiles in a swipeable row, reel-style
Wide (16:9)Landscape tiles, three per row on desktop
  1. Add the section and pick a layout (see above).
  2. Set the Heading (“Watch the pack” by default) and a Subheading if you want one.
  3. Open the first Video item block and upload a video under Video (uploaded to Shopify), or paste a YouTube/Vimeo link under Or video URL. A Shopify-hosted video takes priority.
  4. Optionally pick a Cover image — without one, the video’s own preview frame is used.
  5. Repeat for the remaining blocks, and click Add block → Video item for more (up to 12).
  6. Decide on Scrolling row and, for wide layouts, Columns on desktop.
  7. Save and tap a few covers in the preview to test.

  • Match clips to the layout shape. Circles, Grid and Mixed sizes show squares; Portrait videos show tall 4:5 tiles; Wide (16:9) shows landscape tiles. Covers in the matching shape look cleanest — the section trims anything else to fit.
  • Cover image: export at the layout’s shape (square 800 × 800, portrait 800 × 1000, or wide 1600 × 900) so the first frame already looks intentional. Without a cover, the video’s preview frame is shown automatically.
  • Keep clips short. These tiles invite quick browsing — 15 to 60 seconds per clip keeps shoppers watching more than one.
  • Upload to Shopify when you can. Shopify-hosted videos play right on the page; YouTube and Vimeo links load those platforms’ players.
  • Reorder clips by dragging the Video item blocks in the sidebar — the first block is the featured tile in the Mixed sizes layout.
  • On computers, hovering gives a silent preview. With a Shopify-hosted video, resting the pointer on a cover plays a muted loop over it; moving away pauses and rewinds. Nothing is downloaded until the first hover. Shoppers who prefer reduced motion see only the covers.
  • Clicking or tapping always opens the full player — with controls and sound, right in the tile. Phones have no hover, so shoppers tap to play.
  • Autoplay for linked videos depends on the browser. YouTube and Vimeo clips start when the shopper taps the cover; some browsers let them begin silently, others wait for a tap. Uploaded Shopify videos give the most predictable behavior.
  • The videos load on demand. Covers are ordinary images; the video files only download when a shopper previews or plays them, so a section with twelve clips is still light on page load.
  • A video slot with no video and no link shows a neutral placeholder cover so you can still see the layout while setting up.

Customer clip wall (Circle badges). Six short customer clips uploaded to Shopify, Item size Medium, no scrolling row, Heading “The pack has spoken”, Link pointing to a community page. Place near the bottom of the home page as a social-style closer.

How-to reel strip (Portrait videos). Four 30-second grooming demos in 4:5, uploaded to Shopify, Scrolling row on so the row stays one line on every screen, Heading “Grooming in 30 seconds”, Link label “More tutorials” with a link to the blog. Place on a collection page for grooming products.

I filled in both a Shopify video and a YouTube link — which one plays? The Shopify-hosted video. The URL setting is only used when no video is uploaded in the same block.

My hover preview doesn’t appear. Hover previews only run on computers with a mouse and only for Shopify-hosted videos; they are also switched off for shoppers who prefer reduced motion. Tap the cover to check the full player still opens.

Why do my covers look cropped into circles? The Circle badges layout makes every tile round and square-shaped before that. Upload square covers, or switch to a layout that matches your footage, such as Wide (16:9).

Scrolling row is on but Mixed sizes ignores it. That is expected: the Mixed sizes collage always keeps its grid shape. Turn on Scrolling row for Circle badges, Grid, Portrait videos, or Wide (16:9).

Where did “View all” in the corner come from? The Link label is empty, so the theme falls back to “View all”. Type your own label to replace it — and remember the link only shows once a destination is set.
